I work by commission, and the commission starts with getting to know each other. That part is the method rather than a formality: what I make for you is shaped by what I know of you, so the knowing comes first. Skip it and the piece is generic, which is a good reason for me to have stayed out of it.

It also means we both get to decide. You work out whether you want the thing I would make, and I work out whether I want to put the hours in. Either of us can say so, and saying so early is the kind thing to do.

Every so often I make a piece with no person in mind and release it — offered up for request, or to auction when more than one person wants it. Those are the pieces where the material led rather than the person.

What a piece costs depends on who is receiving it. Sometimes I give it as koha, because that is the right shape for that person and that piece. Sometimes it is priced, and I will name the price plainly and hold it. I am comfortable at both ends and I will tell you which one you are at.
